    Another silver Mk3...?

Post by Geeman on Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:05 am

I bought this a few weeks back as a 'light' project.

Bought it without the wheels (a huge sigh of relief from everyone!) and drove it home from Coventry with an average 39.5mpg! It drove really tight and I'm more than happy with it.

I've got lows to go on, some rims and it's in for paint this weekend. Two new front wings and some slight cosmetics on the drivers' door. Apart from that, it's mint on the outside. There are a few things in the interior that need attention, but nothing serious.

So... this is a 'before' pic. Will post some more pics when it's complete.

Picking it up from the paint shop today.

There's not much I'm doing to it to be honest. Just a few minor cosmetic changes, making it minty fresh - new drivers seat, leather wheel, stuff like that.

Just got the coilies and top mounts to install (when the weather gets better) then it'll be done.

Just a quick update on the Mk3...

New front wings fitted and painted.

New interior sourced so I can make up a mint set.

Coilovers bought, but not fitted. (next week if it doesn't rain or snow!)

Comps now fitted with 195/40's for clearance.

Here's a pic showing the visual mods I'm doing to it. Matte black front grille slats, wing mirror covers, B-pillars (with matte vinyl) and rear number plate plinth. I've also got my obligatory fog-light bumper vent replacements in the garage ready to go on.

I've also got a brand new red Anniversary GTI badge for the grille. Have been toying with the idea of a red pinstripe in the bumpers and side trim. What do you think?

    Cheers Mike.

I just got some FK coil-overs for it today, so hopefully this weekend will see it slammed (weather and DIY jobs permitting!).

Just waiting for some Lamin-x to turn up, then I've got everything I need for it. Just for to get it all on the thing.

Pop round for a butchers if you've got a spare 5 mins...

I had bought some cheap ebay coilies... then a brand new set of FK's turned up for sale locally, so I managed to move mine on very quickly and purchase these 'better' branded units for the same price. Result!

Planning on doing some work on it this weekend if a) I get back in time, b) it's not raining, c) Rach doesn't tie me to the conservatory to get that finished instead!

AT LAST! FK coil-overs now on (got rid of eBay jobbies and bought these instead!). Now they're on, I've got to adjust them down a LOT. Now there's a knocking from the rear though. Will have to strip them down again to see what it is. Grrrrr!

New rear brakes on (rear calipers were bitches to wind back in!).

    Fog vents in.

Refurbished the rear hatch spoiler with plastic effect paint. Same stuff I used on number plate plinth, wing mirror covers and grille & badge. They've all come up really well. Very happy with them.

New drivers seat to go in, one last bit of cosmetic work (Lamin-x headlights and rear lights)... then it's done!

have you replaced the wing seems to be a water/mud trap on the mk3 all go there leads to some rot setting in if not sorted

Jez... I completely replaced both front wings. They were rotten at the bottom by the sill. Would you believe that they were the only bits on the car that needed any attention!

Here's some sneaky peeks of the things I've been doing over the last couple of days...

The Lamin-x tinting factory was in full flight last night... red top tints and light-smoke reverse tints on the rears, light-smoke on the headlights and front flashers. They've come out really well.

My favourite stuff in the world at the moment... plastic texture paint on the mirrors, rear spoiler, numberplate plinth and grille inserts...

Proof of stuff happening right here folks! The tinting has worked really well I think.

Should be finished this weekend... Cool

Nope... this one is up for sale soon. I bought it specifically to modify and sell on.

It really is a minter now. I should really be keeping it as I doubt I'll find another one in such good condition.

I'm keeping 'the next one' that I'm picking up this weekend though! Wink

Ha, ha, ha, loving the fact that you've already got the 'next one' lined up Gee. I love the current silver one, it looks in such good condition and you're right about the tinting and textured paint, it's worked really well.

...and a sneaky rear-end shot with the new DIY tints on.

Just got the new sill-cover strip to go on, leather wheel to put on, drivers seat swapped over and it's done! Then it'll get a proper detail and be up for sale.
